CooCoo for Coconut! <3

Coconut Oil and Shredded Coconut

Look what came by Fed Ex today… my unsweetened  shredded coconut and my Coconut Oil. Both are from Tropical Traditions.   I use Coconut Oil in everything from cooking, coffee, oil pulls, deodorant and toothpaste!  I am going to use the shredded coconut to make coconut milk that will go  in my shampoo recipe.  It can also be used in smoothies, recipes or drink alone.

While I was waiting for all the ingredients to get here for the Natural Homemade Shampoo (from Wellness Mama), I found a shampoo at the store that doesn’t have sodium chloride, sulfates. parabens or gluten.

Argan Oil Shampoo

I tried the “no poo” shampoo way for a month and just couldn’t take it anymore.  My hair felt heavy and oily.   The article says it can take up to 2 months but I caved after one. This shampoo is working well so far until I can get my recipe together  from Wellness Mama.  I am not adding the Vitamin E capsules since they are optional.   I’ll try it for a while and let you know how it goes! 🙂

The home made deodorant has been trial and error for me.  I started out with Coconut Oil, Baking Soda, Cornstarch and Lavender Essential Oil because I had those on hand.   It did not work well because it irritated my armpits and made them itch.  I did a bit of research and some folks seemed to think it was the baking soda that caused the irritation while others said it was the cornstarch.  So I bought Arrowroot powder( to replace the corn starch) and Shea Butter  through Amazon and made one with equal parts of coconut oil and shea butter and added some arrow root powder to thicken it.  I used an essential oil for fragrance.  I realized on Day 1 that it was not going to work!  It smelled good but offered zero deodorizing !  Oops!  lol.   (woeful glance to my long suffering family who puts up with me).  So I hoped it was the corn starch and not the baking soda causing the irritation.  I reworked my batch to add in baking soda.     Voila!  🙂   Problem solved.   I am very relieved.  I also got this deodorant recipe from Wellness Mama!

Today I did a dry scalp treatment for my daughter Katherine that is from The Mother Huddle that is 4 tablespoons coconut oil, 2 -3 drops Tea Tree Oil and 3-4 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil.

Essential Oils

I worked it into her scalp with her hair dry.  She got a nice head massage that she enjoyed!  She kept it in for 20 minutes and then went to take her shower as normal.

She was happy with the results after being not so happy about the coconut oil running down her forehead (she kept bending her head down to look at her Ipod).

Next day: Had to edit this post to add that apparently there is Coconut Sugar!! *oh my gosh*  “Coconut palm trees are the natural source of this sugar. Traditional sugar  farmers collect the nectar of the blossoms from these sustainably grown trees,
and carefully craft a caramel-like crystal sugar. Perfect as a 1:1 cane sugar replacement

Check it out here —>  Navitas Naturals Coconut Palm Sugar

My thanks to my daughter Heather   “Jeanie” Carlock for sharing this on FB!! 🙂

Well that’s enough out of me for now!  More later as my adventures with coconut oil and coconut continue.

Have a happy day 🙂

Happenstance, Circumstance and other Oddites of Life

The catalyst for change is often rooted in unhappiness.  Unhappiness with a job or a relationship or the way we look in the mirror  or a health concern et al.   For me it was a combination of being unhappy with my body image and unhappy about  my health.

This spurred me, initially, to make some changes.  I began researching Vegan (Forks Over Knives) and Paleo (then segued to Primal) to try to determine which path was better for me, my lifestyle and my habitts.  I eventually settled on Primal but did little to make real sweeping dietary changes other than eliminating grains from my diet.   I later added Omnitrition products that I loved and still love btw!  Cant say enough good things about Omni Charge and NiteLite!  Also lost 20 lbs on Omn Drops *whoot!* that I later gained back by going crazy over the holidays.  Then the holidays slid into the new year and I just kept on sliding.  Right back to where I had begun!  Naughty me.

But I knew my son was coming home in the spring and he had been doing vegan (when his budget and work schedules allowed) and had been working out.  He promised to whip his Mom back into shape.  😮

So now the journey began again.  And I noticed some interesting coincidences.  My son had been doing vegan and is a proponent of it, my newly found cousin Ellen had switched to Vegan and then my elder daughter embraced the Vegan lifestyle.  What??!  Is there some cosmic force at play here?  Or just a lot of happenstance?  *hmmm*

Also in all of my reading in prep for my son’s return home I had begun to read about how bad some things are for you.. like cow’s milk, soy, commercial deorderants/antipersperants…  and even tooothposte.  So I had been mulling over making some changes like giving up these items for home made ones.  I had stopped drinking cow’s milk nearly 2 years ago in favor of Almond Milk.  And while mulling and musing, I noticed my daughter posting about “oil pulling” and going to home made toothpaste and going “no ‘poo”.    My smarmy reaction is “great minds think alike” but it did give me pause to wonder about these continuously converging happenings.

So here i sit today, on a daily work out (Monday through Wednesday and Friday, Sat) regime with my son.  I take supplements he recommended for the work outs and he makes us nutritious Smoothies at least 3 days a week.

Today, after giving up commercial store bought anti persperant about 4 days ago (I was washing my pits with warm water and soap multiple times per day ) I made my first batch of Home made deoderant today!

Glamorous stuff , eh?  It is made from coconut oil, baking soda and cornstarch.  I whipped it up in 5 quick minutes from a receipe located here.   I used it for the first time before going to work out with my son this evening.  Yes I did sweat but I didn’t stink~ *yea*

My next adventure is going to be toothpaste.  I’m still VERY much on the fence on the no poo thing . LOL.  But I may  give it a go at some point.

Health and happiness to you all from Georgia~

Stressed out about relaxing…

I read an interesting article today on the “secret ingredient to weight loss”.  Sounded tantalizing.  Then I read it and thought, oh yeah.  That.,,,

   STRESS!!!

Just saying it makes me tense.   But stress and how we deal with has a tremendous impact on our weight.  Familiar with the phrase “Weighed down with stress” ?  It makes sense now doesn’t it?   I have about one hundred pounds worth of the stuff I’d like to unload. ..  If only it were that easy.

Here is the link to the article I read this morning on ways to de-stress.

I am learning , albeit slowly, how to not get stressed out so easily.   It’s really not worth it in the final analysis.  Things won’t be better for my getting all upset and agitated so why bother.    It also has a detrimental affect on my ability to get through whatever the situation is that is causing me stress.  If I stay calm and just focus on the task at hand, it all goes much better.    I risk angering a few people in my life who seem to generate and thrive on stress because they get the mistaken idea that I am not taking the situation seriously.   But it’s a risk I am willing to take at this point in my life.

Going to go relax and hydrate.   Have a happy Sunday.

Eat More Things That Come From Plants, Not Made in Plants (Factories)

A wonderful friend of mine from Mississippi sent me an email the other day entitled  2012 Handbook.  An excerpt  from the email is as follow:

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants..
4. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games
7. Read more books than you did in 2011
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

It was #3 that grabbed my attention since my health and diet have been on my mind so much this year.   I thought , I should write that out and tape it to our refrigerator!!   We are eating a lot more fruits and raw veggies than we were previously.  And I like it!  I really do!   Fresh berries are so much more yummy and good for my body than Oreos! lol.

But I began to reflect on the  some of other ones on that list as well that pertain to diet and exercise.:

1. Drink plenty of water…    there is lots of evidence, both scientific and anicdotal, that drinking more water is good for us.   Being properly hydrated helps our mood, helps our cognition, aids digestion, helps our muscles be more efficient and aids in the elimination of waste from our body.

2 .  Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.  …  Breakfast is called just that because we are breaking the fast that we have been undergoing overnight while we sleep.   It’s the meal where we give our body the fuel, yep the FUEL , that we need to do all of our daily activities.  You don’t set out on a long day of errands with a  gas tank on empty now do you?   So don’t do that to your body either!  Filler up with a full tank so your body can function at peak performance!    Lunch should be a recharge… only fill up as much as you need to sustain you for the rest of your day’s activities.  And the evening meal should be your wind down.  Don’t load your intestines up with heavy foods before bed.   Do you fill up your gas tank with high octane fuel before bed and leave it idling in the garage all night?  What a waste that would be.   Don’t do it to your body either!!

10. Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile. …   Move that body!! Stretch those muscles get that heart rate up!  Even if for just a few minutes at a time.  I work from home and my, um , expansive, hind quarters are parked in a comfy leather computer chair with arm rests most of the day.  But I make it a point to check myself.   I get up and walk around at least once an hour….  I walk to the front of the house to see what the neighbors are up to, I move laundry from the washer to the dryer, I spend a few minutes with the dogs or go get another glass of water.   Anything at all to get up and move!!  Push a broom,  pace the house, go check the mail.  Whatever, just get moving!  If you don’t burn that fuel you are giving yourself  daily, it ‘s gonna get stored… Just like mine did…  You’re gonna end up with too much “junk in your trunk”!! lol.    and for goodness sake,…. smile, laugh, giggle, guffaw!  Laughter is good, so good for the soul!! 🙂

Ok that’s it for now.   But let me leave you with two things this evening.

1.  A web site …    PaleoHacks

and

2.  A video   Paleo In a Nutshell

A Journey of a Thousand Miles

… or in my case, 100 pounds, begins by taking the first step.

So far I have  …  1. increased my water intake to 6-8 12 oz glasses per day

2. decreased my caffeine intake to 2 cups of coffee in the morning

3. cut grains from my diet.

What I haven’t done yet : 1. increased my level of exercise

2. Tried  any  Primal recipes

But at least  I am moving in the right direction.  🙂  I think the fact that I am craving those grains is actually a good sign.   Even my husband admitted to me this morning that he is craving doughnuts this morning which is unusual for him as he generally doesn’t crave sweets of any kind.

Also caught an interesting vid on YouTube this morning by way of a FB post by Julian Lennon.

Check it out here please?  Video.    I posted it also on my FB page so if you are one of my FB buddies and you already saw it then just ignore the link , lol.   But if you ignored it there *glare* don’t make that mistake twice.  It’s a good use of your time, I promise.

And in other news, my daughter Heather gave me a link to the Food Renegade site.  There is a boat load of info there folks!!! Not as much as Mark’s Daily Apple, mind you, but still.  I could dive in here and not resurface for days, lol.  One page I found helpful since I am a ‘newbie’ to the idea of eating food that is as close to it’s natural or raw state as possible is the one entitled Newbie Tips

That’s all I’ve got for now gang.  I’m still a bit over saturated with the info.  Trying to process what I’ve been reading and adjusting my mindset to be more proactive about a lot of things in my life, not just the food. 🙂
